Physical features
Location
The Great Artesian Basin is located on the Eastern side of Australia. The most Northern point is near Cape York, QLD, the Eastern point is close to Brisbane, QLD, the Southern most point is Dubbo, NSW and the most Western point is near Alice Springs, NT. Most of the area that the Great Artesian Basin covers would have been desert is it wasn't for the many spring systems that bubble up from the basin.
Size
The Great Artesian Basin is the largest basin in Australia and covers 22% of Australia, about 1/4 of our country. Overall, it covers approximately 1.7 million square kilometres.
Bores
Before bores were drilled, the Great Artesian Basin used to only bubble up in natural spring. But now with over 400 bores drilled into the Great Artesian Basin, some natural springs don't have enough pressure to continue to flow. Even though some springs have dried up, some of the bores are flowing uncontrollably, wasting hundreds of litres of our fresh basin water.
Watershed
The Great Artesian Basin spans out under portions of four different catchments, the Lake Eyre, the Murray- Darling, the Gulf of Carpentaria and the North-east Coast. These catchments are the water suppliers for the basin.
